What are kegel balls?
Kegel balls - also known as Ben Wa balls - are small, weighted balls that can be inserted into the vagina. They can come in the form of a single ball or a few connected together, and a wide range of sizes means you’ll definitely be able to find one that you feel most comfortable with.
They are used in kegel exercises to help strengthen the pelvic floor through the tightening and releasing of pelvic muscles (the same muscles you use to hold your pee in when you feel the urge to use the bathroom in the middle of giving an important presentation). In turn, the pelvic floor supports the uterus, bladder, small intestines and rectum.
So what’s the deal with training muscles in your nether region? Well, they supposedly can enhance your sexual pleasure and boost your sex life! Case in point: other names for kegel balls include pleasure beads, love balls, jiggle balls and orgasm balls...so you get the drift.
With LELO’s Hula Beads, it is much more than just a kegel ball. It’s a kegel ball-cum-vibrator with a ROTATING head and remote control functionalities all rolled into one.
Here’s what you get:
The Hula Beads come in 3 colours: Deep Rose, Ocean Blue and Black.
Product functions and quality
Left to right: Cornetto's ice cream cone and LELO Hula Beads™
Firstly, let’s talk about the size of the toy. It is a double-bead massager with an insertable length of 8cm and weighs slightly less than 70g, or approximately the weight of Cornetto’s ice cream cone. With a circumference range of about 10cm (top bead) to 12cm (bottom bead), it is easy to insert and comfortable for prolonged use.
As someone who has never used kegel balls or done any kegel exercises before, inserting it in (after coating it in lube) was a piece of cake! I left it inside for about 30 minutes as I went about my regular activities, which is mostly sitting down in front of my laptop and occasionally getting up for a glass of water. To my surprise, I could move normally without having to waddle around like a penguin to keep the toy from slipping out.
If the toy somehow gets lost inside the body during your playtime, to get it out DO NOT FORCEFULLY PULL ON THE CORD; THIS TOY IS NOT A BEYBLADE. Simply tug gently on the cord attached to the bottom of the toy to ease it out instead, like you are removing a tampon.
Kegel ball variants, from left to right: Non-vibrating, remote-controlled and vibrating, removable-ball training set
Compared to other kegel balls in the market, the Hula Beads give you a wide variety of functions to play with - to be specific, 8 adjustable vibration settings including a constant vibration or 1-second-long vibrating pulses. The remote control function comes in the form of LELO’s SenseMotion™ Technology. It allows a user to control the toy via the movement of the Insignia Wireless Controller from a range of up to 12 metres.
The main feature of this product is its rotating/swivelling/gyrating head (I prefer to use the verb ‘rotating’). The top bead swirls gently while the entire body of the toy vibrates, so you have the flexibility to use the toy either:
- Externally, on sensitive points of the body
- Internally, by inserting it as deeply as you prefer to stimulate the clitoris, labia or even the G-spot
The toy itself is USB-rechargeable, fully waterproof and made from ABS plastic (the shiny bottom portion of the toy) and a silky smooth high-grade matte silicone material which feels pretty luxurious to the touch. Its remote controller is battery-operated, but thankfully there are 2 batteries included in the box itself so you can get to work almost immediately 😉
To give some context, I’m someone who has never needed to use lube during sex. Nevertheless, I applied a thin coating of lube onto the toy just in case before inserting it inside myself. The lube made it a breeze to slide the beads in, so here’s a tip for those who experience pain in PIV (penis-in-vagina) sex or if you’re unsure about how much lube to use: always overestimate the amount you really need - the last thing you need is to feel pain (and then panic) from the friction when you’re trying to insert it in. Keep a bottle of lube handy during your sexy time because you never know when you’re going to need it, and when you do use lube, be generous about it!
TLDR: slow breaths, a relaxed state of mind and LOTS OF LUBE will guarantee successful insertion and the start of some hot and heavy sexy time.
The moment of truth
The sensations from the rotating head - which LELO describes as “unlike anything you’ve felt before: natural, deep and incredibly powerful” is true to a certain extent. It definitely is unlike anything I’ve felt before. It felt like someone was swirling their fingers along the sides of my vaginal walls, but it wasn’t like anything particularly exciting and it didn’t feel any more pleasurable than a regular insertable vibrator. I was slightly disappointed, but not all hope is lost! There are still other ways to use this toy. For example, you can stimulate other parts of the body, such as the clitoris, with the rotating head for a slightly different sensation as compared to other conventional vibrators.
Swirling disappointment aside, the vibrations from the beads were amazing. For those who are playing with vibrators for the first time, the strength of the vibrations may often seem too powerful at first. But once inserted, they are super comfortable and of just the right strength. If it is too weak or too strong for your preference, you can use the remote controller to adjust the intensity of the vibrations easily.
The ability to control the intensity of the vibrations remotely is super helpful in finding the perfect vibrating power to send you into the throes of ecstasy. I found mine pretty quickly with just a few flicks of my wrist - the remote controller is that responsive. Switching between the vibration settings may become a challenge once you begin inserting the toy into your body, but that’s what the remote controller is for!
Before insertion, the sound from the vibrations are similar to that of an iPhone’s vibration, but just a tiny bit louder. Once inserted, the sound becomes barely audible, like a low hum. Even the vibrations from the remote controller can be switched off with the tap of a button, ensuring ultra-secret playtime.
Join in the fun
With the remote controller, the Hula Beads are perfect for couple play in the bedroom AND in public. The beads and remote both vibrate with the same intensity, and this can be a turn-on for some because you can hold the remote and actually feel the same vibrations as the other person with the beads without having to be physically in contact. Now you can re-enact that Fifty Shades masked ball scene with the beads inside you and hand the reins over to your partner, and no one will know you’ve got a gyrating vibrator inside your body stirring up some serious pleasure!
Lastly, a few important things to note:
- Remember to read the instructions manual before attempting to play with this toy. By knowing all the functions of the Hula Beads AND the accompanying remote controller, you’ll be able to tap on the full potential of this baby.
- A couple of friends and acquaintances have asked me if I’ve tried any form of butt play with this, so let me set the record straight: THIS TOY IS NOT FOR ANAL PLAY.
It is important to note that LELO is a premium sex toy brand and the majority of its vibrators are priced within the $100-$300 range. With that said, unless you are specifically interested in the rotating-bead functionality, it is not worth the hefty price tag.
For those who want a kegel exercise toy that can double as a vibrator, there are cheaper alternatives of similar quality such as We-Vibe’s Bloom, which also has remote control functions. Otherwise, newbies can consider California Exotic’s Rechargeable Kegel Ball or non-vibrating varieties such as Satisfyer’s Single-Ball training set that comes in 3 different colours for normal, experienced and advanced levels.

This is definitely a fun variant on conventional kegel items and a great product to add some variety to a couple’s toy collection. That swirling sensation from the beads in your body is definitely a novel experience, but the price tag attached might scare many people off, especially if you’re new to kegel exercises.
Ultimately, it comes down to how important kegel exercises are to you - if you’re a hardcore Ben Wa ball advocate, then this is literally made for you. If you’re only at the exploratory stage in the realm of sex toys or just starting out on kegel-related activities, there are other wallet-friendly alternatives you can try before bringing out the big guns 😎
